Abby Raines is leaving Las Vegas. She’s trading the glitter and excess of her hometown for the rolling hills and lush forests of Rapid City, South Dakota. She’s taken her first real job and she’s determined to succeed on her own.

Mark Marsten traded the Texas range for the Army Rangers years ago and never looked back. Now, he’s settled permanently in Rapid City with the remaining members of his Special Forces unit. He thought he had it all, well almost anyway. Until a sassy redhead with a sharp tongue and body to die for rolled into town.

Mark knows he’s too much for her long-term, but he can’t resist a fling with Rapid City’s newest resident. He thought he knew the game. After all, it’s his game. And always his rules. But more and more it feels like Abby is the one holding all the cards.

Burnout is a series but each novel can stand alone on its own. You do not have to read Tex to enjoy the others. It is the only novel in the series with BDSM. If you don’t like BDSM skip this one. Fair warning the kink factor is extremely high.

Well, I hate to say it, but this book just frustrated me to no end. In Shooter (book 1 of the series) I adored Tex. I knew, he was most likely going to be my favorite. Especially learning about his BDSM lifestyle.
However, in Shooter, they make it seem more like a fetish than a real lifestyle. We learn in Tex that it is indeed a very serious lifestyle for Tex.
So basically, Tex meets Abby right when Abby is driving into town. She is of course, in search of a new life for herself. She's from Vegas and just wants to start over and do things on her own.
She's this one of a kind hot chick that not only works on cars, know's all about them, shoots guns and is a total bad a** chick, but it also seems might be the perfect sub for Tex.
Slowly they start experimenting together.
Here's were I run into my issues: Tex isn't sure if she's a true sub. So he wants to put her through training, because absolutely in no way will any relationship work unless the woman is a sub...a TRUE sub...not just playing like one here and there. It actually turned me off of Tex quite a bit. I feel like, Dom's usually want their subs to be happy and comfortable in the relationship. That's their job as the Dom. But I felt like he was coming off WAYYY too selfish...just worried about himself and was she going to be able to live up to his standards. I mean I know he's got to work her up to what he feels he needs to be able to do to her, but Jesus dude, chill the F out a little bit.
THEN ! OH SWEET LORD ABOVE, THEN he actually got p-ss-d at her, because during her weekend where she gave him ABSOLUTE control over her, she started feeling a little caged in and kind of like a dog (which is a completely normal mental response, duh Tex who studied Psychology), so what's he do to reassure his sub? HE tell's her he will treat her like a dog and calls her a b-t-h and makes her sleep naked and chained to the bathroom floor. Makes her eat and drink like a dog AND MAKES HER Pee IN THE YARD like a dog. Talk about degrading. Then, he screwed her in the a**, literally and emotionally and told her to leave after treating her like a dog.
Of course, our heroine, who to me, is just obsessed and not in love, gets over it and apologizes to him for hurting him and not being what he wanted her to be.
I was not expecting my Tex to come off this way. Even his apology to her a few weeks later (after she yet again groveled to him)was pathetic. Heck, I don't want the jerk anymore, someone else can have him.
I felt like our heroine just had no self respect. Dom/sub is mutual respect for each other and trust. There is no way that respect and trust are actually there. A Dom can't get mad at his sub and take it out on her and abuse that trust because he know's she'll let him. And that's exactly what Tex did.
Don't even get me started on the whole story line about how she basically "runs" Las Vegas. Yeah...whatever.
I was totally disappointed on where this went and felt like the author was way off on the Dom/sub relationship. He didn't want a sub, he wanted a Pet, which is exactly what he called her.
OHHH! And then there's the part where he brings in a female Dom and let's her have her way with her. Toward the end she, to me, convinced herself to enjoy it (even though the whole time she was worried that the guy who set it up was testing her to see if she'd "cheat" on him, but I felt like she just felt trapped and didn't know what to do. Cue the dog scene mentioned above that follows. See what I mean?? I just found so many things emotionally wrong with this story.
I don't feel like it was a romance at all. Not even the parts where Tex, later in the book, started becoming the old Tex again. By that point my love for him had checked out and all I could think about is her having to pee in the grass and getting forced enemas.
Maybe I'm way off, and you'll love this story, but you can definitely check me off that list. More power to ya if you can read this and enjoy it. I was just wanting Tex to be so awesome and was highly disappointed. Boo Tex.
Now all that said I can not WAIT for the next book. Shooter was awesome and I am holding on hope that Easy, Hawk and Caleb have just as good of stories as Shooter. If so, I'll consider Tex a small bump in the road instead of what I consider it now.

Tex Burnout Book 2 edition by Dahlia West Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

So I loved the first book, Shooter. Tex was my favorite character so I was excited he'd get his story. I loved the beginning of their romance. She's a clever, big-hearted ball-buster in her everyday life. New in town, grew up in Vegas, loves classic cars. Vegas' only hang up is that she's not so confident in the romance department. She was raised by her Dad and he didn't encourage her feminine side or really allow dating. She meets Tex and they hit it off. I love how Dahlia West lets their friendship grow gradually over the course of several weeks. Vegas meets his friends and they learn about mutual interests. This is getting good! Then Tex starts to introduce her to BDSM. She likes it, but she's conflicted because it's not what 'good girls' do. At first, Tex acts like he has patience to introduce her to the lifestyle, but he sets her up for a big fall. He says she has trust issues (no, duh, that's rational) so he wants to do a total power exchange weekend to teach her to trust him. She asks what could happen during that weekend and he won't tell her, just says whatever I want. But she agrees, despite her uncertainty. They don't ever talk about limits. They don't ever talk about things she finds sexy or scary. That's a big no no, even with a total power exchange. So...less than 24 hours into the weekend he gets her naked and cuffed. Then he invites someone over. And he treats Abby like she's invisible while he entertains another woman. He lets this person touch her. He allows this person to force Vegas to touch her sexually. Surprise, surprise, she freaks out. She never once agreed to be humiliated. She never agreed to have another person engage sexually. That is a HUGE violation of trust in my book. So she hurts his feelings because when she tells him that she's already freaked out and is terrified of what will happen in the next 24 hours. She tells him that she's scared that he's going to treat her like a dog. So what does he do? Yup. Treats her like a dog...but a dog that he really doesn't like. Like makes her pee outside and feeds he dry cereal in a bowl on the floor with no utensils. He makes her sleep the night chained to a bathroom floor. Then he basically rapes her and kicks her out of the house.

So get this.....Dahlia West has Vegas apologize to Tex for doubting him. She has her get a Tattoo with Tex's name on her butt so she can communicate that she trusts him. Ewwwww.

I'm soooooooo disappointed, I loved Tex. But he outright abused her...even if you use the excuse that it was a total power exchange weekend there are actual limits that people don't cross, easpecially when you are introducing someone to a new lifestyle. Communication is the key thing. Tex was the expert, the one with the knowledge and power and he used it to make Vegas feel used, demeaned and dehumanized. He was older, more knowledgeable, on his turf, with his friends. She was every kind of vulnerable and he took advantage of her in the worst way,

I'm embarrassed that I paid money for this book.

That said, the trip to Vegas was really fun. It was great to reconnect with the other characters, especially Shooter and Slick. At least their relationship is still a loving one.
Shooter (Burnout 1) was a great book. Shooter was an Alpha with attitude who turned into a romantic Alpha. I was so excited for book 2. I wouldn't believe the bad reviews I saw. I was wrong. Tex was an AWFUL book. I do not know much about BDSM but, I know that if you are going to include it in a romance novel, you probably shouldn't leave out the romance. There were plenty of enema's though. In book 1, Tex was a good guy with a lifestyle choice. In this book he was a guy who had no grasp of his own lifestyle and had to play mind games. You can't build up your hero as a good guy who would never hurt a woman only to have him abuse her emotionally and call it BDSM...or you can but I'm returning this for a refund.
Had me hooked right up until the first sexual encounter..I could have LOVED this book, but after that point was not just sex, not just BDSM ((which I enjoy reading)) but this was just I dunno, the chemistry between H & h evaporated,,,, it was yes sir & no sir , only bedroom scenes, no relationship outside of the bedroom anymore...she all of a sudden was his sub & he didnt even take care of her , didnt treat her tenderly after each episode...now the beginning of the book I LOVED IT! she was snarky, motorcycle riding bitch that could build a car from the ground up..what happen??? he even helped her on the car ( no interactions with other characters anymore I just was saddened because I wanted to LOVE this book...
